Mara Aranda’s 25 years on stage coincide in 2015 with the 450th Annivesary of the arrival of the Sephardic Jews to the Ottoman Empire after their expulsion from the Iberian Peninsula.
Produced and directed by citole, lute and hurdy-gurdy expert J Martinez, a group of renowned musicians has come together with the goal of bringing the music of this important period in Spanish history to the public. It was a period of nearly eight centuries when different religions coexisted through times of greater and lesser tolerance to each other, sharing their social and cultural lives: over 24 generations of Judeo-Spaniards of the Sepharad; Moors from Al Andalus; and Christians of Hispania.
Examples of how the Judeo-Spanish population would have lived, songs that would have been passed from father to son down the generations, have survived more than 500 years since they were expelled from Spain. Songs that talk to us not only of their inner-most feelings, their festivities, celebrations and rites, but also of real historical events.
From Iberia to Sofia and Salonika, Sephardic Legacy contains the sounds of Mediaeval Spanish instruments as well as instruments of Northen African and Eastern Mediterranean origin, and follows the example of the Sephardic people themselves, who adapted their musical style to the instruments available and the regions where they settled. Far from leaving behind their rich cultural legacy, the Sephardic people opened themselves and their song to the world. And we can still sing their songs today and share them with all lovers of history, music and tradition.
Mara Aranda cumple en 2015 sus 25 años en los escenarios y lo hace con una gira que comienza en Sofia (Bulgaria), para celebrar el 450 aniversario de la llegada de los sefardíes al antiguo Imperio Otomano.
Se acercarán al público unas músicas que han formado parte importante de la vida social y cultural de los habitantes de las diferentes religiones que convivieron, alternando periodos de mayor y menor tolerancia, durante casi ocho siglos, más de 24 generaciones, en el Sefarad de los hispano-judíos, el Al-Ándalus musulmán o la Hispania cristiana.
Ejemplos de cómo vivían los judíos españoles, de los que han quedado numerosos vestigios y que reflejan en sus cantos todas aquellas tradiciones que pasarían de padres a hijos, por vía oral, conservándose más de 500 años después de su expulsión y que nos hablan de su íntimo sentir, de sus festejos, sus celebraciones y ritos y también de sucesos históricos conectados con el romancero viejo, joya de la literatura española, que atesora una genuina manifestación de nuestra historia y una de las más altas representaciones de la literatura oral.
En el transcurso del concierto encontraremos la sonoridad de instrumentos de la tradición medieval española, así como del norte de África y también de la zona oriental del Mediterráneo,
En esta ocasión, la cantante estará acompañada por Jota Martínez, especializado en cítolas y viola de rueda aplicadas a las músicas tradicionales e históricas (cítola, viola de rueda y buzuki) y poseedor de una de las más grandes colecciones de instrumentos musicales históricos y Abel García, músico que explora desde la contemporaneidad la vía de la tradición en grupos de música tradicional y de vanguardia (viola de rueda y lauto).
