The World Union of Jewish Studies congratulates its President, Professor Yosef Kaplan, for receiving this year's Israel Prize in Jewish History

From the judges’ decision:

Prof_Yosef_KaplanThe Israel Prize in Jewish History is awarded to Professor Kaplan, a scholar of Jewish society and culture in the early modern era, for his decisive contribution in understanding key processes in the development of Jewish society at that time, and their long-term influences.

His contribution is especially noteworthy in understanding the transition from traditional to modern Jewish society and the intellectual works of theMarranos and their descendants, who returned to Judaism in Western Europe and the New World.

On the basis of individual and precise research in many languages??, Kaplan created an impressive and varied picture of Jewish society, economy, culture and religion, closely tied to the surrounding European society, which was also subject to dramatic changes at the time.

Professor Kaplan received international recognition both impressive and rare. He is a prominent and significant academic leader, with a unique presence in both the professional academic and public arenas. He is an excellent teacher who propelled the careers of many students who continue along his path in academic institutions in Israel and abroad.
