Songs of the Aurora Dusk | Teatro Ibérico

The Iberian Theatre is pleased to present, on the 26th October, at 21.00, the concert of Sephardic Music Songs of the Aurora Dusk.

The Sephardim were always a song for every occasion, from dawn to dusk. Sang songs to celebrate the birth, dating, engagement, wedding. After the Diaspora, the repertoire we know as traditional Sephardic music, with over 500 years of survival in exile, came to us by oral transmission and due to the efforts of women. Were women who during these centuries, followed the housework and took care of children with the chords of the song Sephardic prepared feasts and comforted the pain with a song that has survived to the present day.

In Judeo peninsular, the music collection includes poems Hebrews, Christians and Arabs and was relevant exponent of a Golden Age located between the X and XII centuries.The variety of themes is rich. Coplas paraliturgical, burlesque versions of texts sung in religious celebrations, mingle with traditional genres of oral transmission. In times of peace, festivals and fairs, listened to folk song jogralesa. The euphoria of love, the lust of pleasure under the sign of Venus enriched and renewed the shaft lyrical poetry of a primitive female matriarchal of Romania and also common to cardjas and muaxáhas Hebrew and Arabic. An alliance primordial word, music and dance, allied to the pilgrimages in festivities. Jugglers, cantadeiras, soldadeiras, troubadours … to the sound of tambourines, violas, harp, guitars, … sonalhas lived. Shared joy and this proximity wove affections and conflicts, similarities and differences.

From the twelfth century, the war of civilizations and religious fundamentalism disturbed Sefarad. The invasion of the Almohads and the Christian Reconquest generate an endless history of intolerance; won the proposal of anorexia nervosa, given the cultural kaleidoscope and religious, in the Iberian Peninsula.

1492 – Spain – to 1496 – Portugal – the expulsion of Jews and Moors, removes many descendants of Sarah and Abraham. Those who remain in Portugal, forced or voluntarily, to be baptized, but among the New Christians not quenched culture learned at home. Most simulate being a Christian, maintaining Jewish practices within the community. The memories of melodies and words revealing a story of loyalty.

And if not all of the Sephardic musical corpus comes from medieval peninsular, is readable reminiscences of interculturality in the Songbook and Sephardic Ballads. Fill the idle hours, tracking jobs, enliven parties and games, a couple of lullabies, love, humorous, the telling of epics, filled with happy family parties, weddings … This legacy incorporated then reasons people and places where they have settled Jews expelled from the Iberian Peninsula. And five centuries later, in the traditional Sephardic songs, reveal themselves talking wires the story of people who have built a common cultural heritage, despite the historical adversities.
