On July 9, 2009 for the third time this year, the Jewish cemetery in Janina, Greece has been attacked and desecrated. Such endemic anti-Jewish and anti-Israeli attitudes have been a fact of life in Greece. Whether from the right or the left, many Greeks hate the Jews and Israel and the clergy and government, either willfully or indifferently do nothing to combat this state of affairs.
Sephardic and Romaniote Jews living in the country have had to endure these incidents since the independence of Greece.
From the massacres in Morea to the Don Pacifico affair, from the pogrom in Corfu to the excesses in Salonica when Greece occupied this Sephardic city, and culminating in the Holocaust, when many Greeks collaborated with the Germans in rounding up and murdering the Jews. A few rose to occasion and saved some Jews at great risk to themselves. We have recongnized such heroic deeds in this newsletter. But we should not be surprised at what happened again in Janina.
All Holocaust memorials, in Salonica, Rhodes, Janina and many others cities have been desecrated time after time.All Jewish cemeteries have had to face the same theats.
The one in Salonica, the oldest and largest Sephardic cemetery in the area, has disappeared, its tombstones at times used as construction materials, and a university built on its land.
The Greek government and the local authorities, whether from the right or left have usually condemned the attacks, promised to do something about them and then put them on the back burner. Nothing shames Greece into taking some action except world public opinion.
We urge our readers to publicize this latest attack, and to write to the Greek ambassador advising him that the world is watching.
