New Book: La Vava de Estambol / The Granny From İstanbul

La Vava de Estambol / The Granny from İstanbul is Roz Kohen’s third book written in two languages, following a collection of childhood memoirs in Jewish İstanbul and stories about prior Jewish generations of İstanbul in Jewish Constantinople. The author’s previous books, as well as La Vava de Estambol / The Granny from İstanbul, aim to capture the spirit of the Judeo-Spanish language as it was spoken for over 500 years by the Jewish communities in the Ottoman Lands.

La Vava de Estambol / The Granny from İstanbul is autobiographical and details the author’s personal experience in her new homeland as an immigrant. Both Judeo-Spanish and its English translation is included to allow the future generations to become familiar with the folklore and culture of Jewish İstanbul, as well as the Jewish language, which was preserved for 500 years, but may inevitably become lost.

La Vava de Estambol / The Granny from İstanbul es el tercer libro de Roz Kohen escrito en dos idiomas, que sigue una colección de memorias de la infancia en la Estambul judía e historias sobre generaciones judías anteriores de Estambul en la Constantinopla judía. Los libros anteriores del autor, así como La Vava de Estambol / The Granny de İstanbul, pretenden capturar el espíritu de la lengua judeo-española tal como fue hablada durante más de 500 años por las comunidades judías en las tierras otomanas.

La Vava de Estambol / The Granny de İstanbul es autobiográfica y detalla la experiencia personal de la autora en su nueva patria como inmigrante. Se incluye tanto el judeoespañol como su traducción al inglés para permitir que las generaciones futuras se familiaricen con el folklore y la cultura de la Estambul judía, así como con el idioma judío, que se conservó durante 500 años, pero que inevitablemente se puede perder.
