Ever since the time of Columbus, Jews have played a significant role as pioneers in the emerging nations of Central and South America. Some included canny adventurers, outlaws and even contrabandistas. Others sported silver-plated swords and other finery while eluding Inquisition officials. At the turn of the 20th century, the vast Argentinian pampas became a lifeline for refugees fleeing Eastern European persecution. Later, Cuba and Bolivia, among other places, provided a refuge from the Nazi threat. Stories from our southern neighbors. A three-part mini course.
