Ladino, a Romance lenguage derived from old Spanish and heavily influenced by Hebrew and Aramic, was spoken by Sephardic exiles around the world, primarily throughout the Ottoman Empire, Professor Balbuena’s presentation will highlight its  development, decline and recent revival among Sephardic communities, especially  in music.

Dr. Monique Rodrigues Balbuena is associate professor of literature at the Universitu of Oregon’s Clark Honors College. Currently a Fellow at the Frankel Institute for Advanced Judaic Studies at the Universitu of Michigan, Dr. Balbuena was a Starr Fellow at the Center for Jewish Studies at Harvard University and frequently serves as a traslator and scholar of comparative literature and Jewish studies.
