Constantinopla, 1902. En un café aman, griegos, turcos, armenios y sefardíes descendientes de los judíos expulsados de España en 1492 se reúnen clandestinamente para cantar. Entonan en un estilo oriental canciones de amor, humorísticas y otras que habla acerca de su realidad política y social. Jako el Muzikante, Jako el buscavidas, malvive cantando en bodas y en fiestas de bar mitzvah, al tiempo que sisa lo que puede a sus complacidos y, muchas veces, embriagados clientes.

Poco después el Imperio Otomano cae y Grecia, Turquía y Armenia adoptan estas músicas y las adaptan dentro de sus nuevas fronteras. Pero las melodías sefardíes caen en el olvido por la complicada situación que sus intérpretes atraviesan.

Comienzos de siglo XXI. Xurxo Fernandes comienza un trabajo de investigación en Turquía e Israel, que le llevará a recopilar el repertorio de temas de aquellos café aman y presenta Jako el Muzikante, un proyecto madurado a lo largo de años de investigación y que nos hace sentir la sonoridad sefardí interpretada en su lengua original, el djudeo-espanyol.

Constantinople, 1902. In a cafe aman, Greeks, Turks, Armenians and Sephardic descendants of the Jews expelled from Spain in 1492 gather together clandestinely to sing. They sing love, humoristic and others songs talking about their political and social reality in an oriental style. Jako el Musikante, Jako the rogue, survives singing at weddings and bar mitzvah parties, while he pilfers what he can to their pleased and, often, intoxicated customers.

Shortly after the fall of the Ottoman Empire, Greece, Turkey and Armenia adopted and adapted all this music within their new borders. But Sephardic melodies fall into oblivion, due to the difficult situation faced by its performers.

In the beginning of the 21st century, Xurxo Fernandes embarks on a research work in Turkey and Israel, that will take him to collect the repertoire of those café aman songs, and presents Jako el Muzikante, a project matured over years of research and that makes us feel the Sephardic sonority performed in its original language, ladino or djudeo-espanyol.
