The Ethnographic Museum of Castile and Lion, Spain, invites submitting proposals for the International Congress on the history and culture of the aljama of Zamora to take place on July 4, 5 and 6 in Zamora, Spain.
In addition to several experts confirmed, we also have two presentations of Sephardic music: Liliana Benveniste, of Argentina, and Zamora Jambrina and Madrid. We are waiting for news about important archaeological finds in the Jewish quarter of the Valley, the present district of Horta.
The main goal of this Conference is exploring the importance of the Jewish presence and its heritage in the city of Zamora before 1492 and its later impact in the global diaspora in Europe, North Africa, and the Americas.
Conference is aimed to faculty, students, and other experts on Jewish Sephardic history, culture and traditions, interested in exploring and expanding on the cultural dimensions of Castilian Jews, and Zamoran in particular, including topics on Crypto Jewish communities.
We encourage proposals, but not limited to, the following topics:
- Zamora city and province aljamas and Jewish quarters: Toro, Villalpando, Benavente, Fermoselle, Sanabria…
- Lives and Works of historical figures like Isaac Campantón, Isaac de León, Isaac Aboab II, Isaac Arama, Samuel Al-Valensí, Alfonso de Zamora, Luis de Carvajal, the younger, among others
- Zamora Talmud-Torah School
- Zamora and Kabbalah
- History of Ideas: Mystics and Alumbrados.
- Possible Jewish roots influences on the arts and literature by Zamoran authors
- Critical studies on historical events related to Zamoran Jews
- Jewish genealogies in/or related to Zamora
- Convivencia relations: Christians, Muslim, and Converts and Jews.
- Archeological evidences of Jewish presence in Zamora
- Portugal and Trans Os Montes connection: Miranda do Douro, Braganza, Carçao and other places.
- Border (La raya) culture: folk stories and music
- Judaism and Literature in Miguel de Cervantes y Saavedra. The role of Zamora.
- Crypto Jewish families in Castile and the Americas.
Proposals will be no more than 500 words and should include Author, Academic or professional affiliation, and email address. Deadline for submissions: May 15, 2013. A peer-reviewed panel will evaluate proposals sending final decisions by June 1st. If approved, papers will be published on the Conference Memoirs by 2014. A Registration fee of 50 Euros or its equivalent in dollars will be charged at the Registration table on the first day of the Conference.
