JGSGB Dutch & Sephardi SIG: «Bevis Marks By All Accounts – S&P meets AI – Meet our Nação Hebráica Ancestors» by Bernard Miller – 12 MAY 2024 by Zoom

Our next Sunday meeting in the JGSGB Meeting Programme is a Dutch & Sephardi Special Interest Group (SIG) Meeting by Zoom.
.
• Date: Sunday 12th May 2024
• Time: 14.00 London, 09:00 New York, 06:00 San Francisco, 16:00 Jerusalem
• Title: «Bevis Marks By All Accounts – S&P meets AI – Meet our Nação Hebráica Ancestors»
• Speaker: Bernard Miller

Description: Genealogists are fortunate that London’s first formal Jewish Community, the Portuguese Synagogue, now Bevis Marks, established with help and protection from Oliver Cromwell, retained extensive records. We are lucky that AI is now helping to make those records available to present-day researchers. The earliest records were handwritten by various scribes in a mixture of languages: about 75% medieval Portuguese, 15% to 20% medieval Spanish and the remainder a mix of Italian, French, Catalan, Hebrew, English, Dutch and German, often all in the same sentence.
.
Transkribus trains computers to read and transcribe (but not translate) texts so that they can be read, sampled and ultimately, where necessary, translated. In the Nação Hebráica (Hebrew Nation) Project, a small group of Sephardic volunteers pits its knowledge and understanding against the historically valuable but sometimes hilarious attempts of AI in working on the transcription of some of the synagogue’s earliest financial accounts. The picture of the workings of the community that emerges is fascinating and much richer than just the regular records of births, marriages and deaths. It will provide invaluable new research possibilities for genealogists, historians and creative writers. Bernard Miller presents some of the challenges, findings and the fun involved.

About Bernard Miller
================
Bernard Miller, JGSGB member and co-ordinator of the Dutch and Sephardic SIG, has presented previously on a range of Sephardic-related topics, including his family’s Sephardic links to Scandinavia and India. A background of research internationally and a knowledge of the languages in which the Bevis Marks records are written, have helped with his modest contribution to the Nação Hebráica project.
