The Executive Board of the Society for Sefardic Studies has decided that its second conference will be on “The Encounter of the Jews of Sefarad with Islam and Muslims” and will be held in Evora, Portugal in 20-23 May 2012.
Please note the dates and the topic which covers thirteen centuries of history. Details will be sent to you soon.
Our colleague Prof. Tavim is the chairman of the organizing committee consisting of Y. Assis, L. Liba Mucznick, M.F. Lopes de Barros, I. Mendes Drumond Braga and R. Sperber.

El Comité Ejecutivo de la Sociedad de Estudios Sefaradíes ha decidido que su segunda Conferencia, tendrá por tema «El encuentro de los judíos de Sefarad con el Islam y los musulmanes» y se celebrará en Evora, Portugal, del 20 al 23 de mayo de 2012.
Por favor, tome nota de la fecha y del tema que cubre trece siglos de historia. Próximamente daremos más detalles.
El Prof. Tavim es el presidente del comité organizador que se compone de los siguientes miembros: Y. Assis, L. Liba Mucznick, M.F. Lopes de Barros, I. Mendes Drumond Braga and R. Sperber.

Society for Sefardic Studies

The Society for Sefardic Studies incorporates scholars from all over the world whose research and interests are mainly concentrated in the history and culture of the Jews of Sefarad and their descendants in the east and in the west, in all fields and disciplines, including history, philosophy, mysticism, literature, languages, art, music, folklore, education, archeology, liturgy, halakhah, Biblical and Talmudic studies etc. The purpose of the Society is to promote and coordinate research, organize conferences and workshops, offer information on research, publications and academic activities in the field of Sefardic studies. The Society will also encourage publications in the field.
The definition of Sefarad for the society is the original meaning of the term, that is the entire Iberian peninsula, consisting of today’s Spain and Portugal. The Society has three divisions:
1. Medieval and Modern Sefarad
2. The Eastern Sefardi Diaspora and Judeo-Spanish Studies
3. The Western Sefardi Diapora
The Society is affiliated to the Ben-Zvi Institute for the Study of the Jewish Communities in the East and has its administrative center in Hispania Judaica at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

En el año 2009 se creó la Sociedad de estudios sefardíes. Dicha sociedad está afiliada al Instituto Ben-Zvi y tiene su sede administrativa en el centro Hispania Judaica de la Universidad Hebrea de Jerusalén.
La Sociedad comprende estudiosos de todo el mundo cuyas publicaciones y actividad investigadora se concentren principalmente en la historia y cultura de los judíos de Sefarad y sus descendientes, tanto en Oriente como en Occidente, en todos los ámbitos, incluyendo historia, filosofía, misticismo, literatura, lenguas judías, arte, música, folklore, educación, halajá, estudios bíblicos y talmúdicos y liturgia. Su objeto es promover y coordinar la investigación, organizar conferencias y simposios e informar de nuevas investigaciones, publicaciones y actividades académicas en el terreno de los estudios sefardíes. LaSociedad estimulará asimismo la publicación de trabajos sobre este tema.
La definición de Sefarad en la Sociedad responde al significado original del término, que abarca a la Península Ibérica entera, es decir, lo que hoy es España y Portugal. La Sociedad consta de tres divisiones:
1. Sefarad medieval y moderna
2. Diáspora sefardí oriental y judeoespañol
3. Diáspora sefardí occidental
La Sociedad está afiliada al Instituto Ben-Zvi para el Estudio de las Comunidades Judías en el Este y tiene su centro administrativo en Hispania Judaica en la Universidad Hebrea de Jerusalén.
