The Spanish government has said it will automatically give citizenship to Sephardi Jews who can prove their ancestry with an official written document, speeding up a process which currently involves them needing to live in the country for two years.
Jewish groups in Spain welcomed the decision, although noted that a decree from the government wasn’t needed, as many of the Jews in question had a historical right to citizenship.
Around 500 years ago Jews living in the Iberian Peninsula were forced to convert to Christianity or leave the country, with an estimated 25-45,000 still living in Spain to this day.
