Communal Candle Lighting
On April 21 the world will commemorate Yom HaShoah, the date chosen in Israel to remember the victims of the Holocaust. Yom HaShoah was established in Israel in 1959 by law. It falls on the 27th of the Jewish month of Nissan, a date chosen because it is the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising, which took place on April 19, 1943. Yom HaShoah ceremonies include the lighting of candles for Holocaust victims and listening to the stories of survivors.
This year, because we are separated to prevent the spread of COVID-19, KKJ’s annual ceremony will be a special virtual commemoration. Please light a candle in memory of our loved ones lost in the Holocaust and share it with us. Also, please join us for a special online commemoration event on April 19 (details below).
Email a photo of your candle to amarcus@kkjsm.org and we will share it online.
You may also email any other information you would like to share, such as your location, family name, and names of family members who perished in the Holocaust.
In our current days when we are faced with darkness, we hope that these candles will keep alive the memory of our lost brethren and help bring more light into this world. May their souls be bound up in the bonds of life.
