Please join us to hear this remarkable -and little known- story of
Jewish continuity over the centuries following the expulsion from Spain!
The Jews of Cape Verde
Thursday, Dec 9, 7pm – 8:30pm
While we know much of the history of Jews expelled from the Iberian Peninsula in the late 15th and early 16th centuries, the story of Sephardic Jews who traveled first to Morocco and Gibraltar and then in the mid 19th century to an archipelago 375 miles off the coast of West Africa is a fascinating but little known part of that history. Descendants of the Cape Verde Jews along with Carol Castiel, director of public affairs programming at Voice of America, founder and director of the Cape Verde Jewish Heritage Project, will tell you about this remarkable history.
The photo shows sisters who are descendants of the Benchimol family – Cape VerdeJews – with a family headstone from a Cape VerdeJewish cemetery.
