This Sunday’s speaker is Betty Jagoda Murphy, who will talk about her mother’s life and music., Flory Jagoda (1923-2021) was a Bosnian-born Sephardic singer and songwriter. She did more than almost anyone to carry the Judeo-Spanish, or Ladino, song tradition of Bosnia into the present day.
Flory Jagoda grew up steeped in the romansas and kantikas – ballads and songs – that her family had preserved for generations. After surviving the war in Italy and emigrating to the United States. She spent the following decades writing new songs in the old idiom, the best known of which, Ocho Kandelikas, has become one of the most widely performed Hanukkah songs in any language.
Betty Jagoda Murphy is Flory Jagoda’s daughter and has continued her mother’s work of performing and teaching the Bosnian Sephardic song repertoire, including with the ensemble Flory’s Flame.
