Sephardic Studies Program Chair: The Jews of Ottoman Izmir: DINA DANON – 5 MAY 2021

Drawing extensively on a rich body of previously untapped Ladino archival material, Dina Danon will offer a new read on Jewish modernity at this virtual talk. Through the voices of beggars on the street and mercantile elites, shoe-shiners and newspaper editors, rabbis and housewives, Danon will highlight how it was new attitudes towards poverty and social class, and not Judaism, that most significantly framed the Izmirli Sephardic community’s encounter with the modern age.
