Dr. Bryan Kirschen – Lecture – Ladino
- January 17 @ 3:30 pm – 5:00 pm
(Judeo-)Spanish Variation among the Sephardim of the United States Lecture by Dr. Bryan Kirschen.
Based on fieldwork in four of the largest Sephardic communities in the United States, this talk sheds light on how Judeo-Spanish-speaking Sephardim in Los Angeles, New York City, South Florida, and Seattle have managed to preserve their heritage language for the past century. In particular, this talk considers the impact that contact with Peninsular and Latin American varieties of Spanish has had on the linguistic structure of Judeo-Spanish and the constant negotiation of Sephardic identity.

His father, Hank Halio, was a well-loved leader in the Sephardic community and author of Ladino Reveries, a most charming compilation of stories.
