The Society for Crypto-Judaic Studies 33rd Annual Conference
El Paso, Texas, August 13-15, 2023.
We are happy to invite you to join us as a presenter or participant as the Society for Crypto-Judaic Studies hosts its 33rd Annual Conference in El Paso, Texas, August 13-15, 2023, its first in-person meeting since the outbreak of COVID. It’s an unparalleled opportunity for learning and informal interaction in a diverse community of professors and lecturers, leaders and individuals with research or personal narratives related to this theme. We are reaching out to you as part of a broad and diverse group of scholars and researchers, participants in previous conferences, and persons and organizations with potential interest. The Society for Crypto-Judaic Studies fosters research, networking of people and ideas, and the dissemination of information regarding the historical and contemporary developments involving crypto-Jews of Iberian origins.
Attached to this email is a Call for Papers. We encourage scholars, professionals, advanced graduate students, and individuals with personal narratives or other research related to crypto-Jews to submit proposals to present papers; the deadline is April 15. Full details including encouraged topics and proposal format are in the attached Call for Proposals. The Call for Papers is also available on the Society’s webpage http://cryptojews.com/ and in the attached newsletter La Granada, (lightly edited). La Granada also has preliminary information about the Conference including the links for Conference Registration (which opens March 1) and for hotel reservations.
We anticipate research presentations on a wide variety of topics, such as the Inquisition in the New World, crypto-Jewish narratives, Sephardic Judaism in literature and history, genetics, and contemporary issues. Our Keynote speaker is Silvia Hamui Sutton, whose Stanley M. Hordes Distinguished Scholar Lecture will discuss Rafael Gil Rodriguez, the last Judaizer known to the Inquisition in Mexico. The prestigious David M. Gitlitz Emerging Scholar Award honors a scholar at an early stage of his or her career and will be announced at the Conference. Participants will enjoy a Fiesta and other cultural offerings, and may take advantage of exciting pre-conference programming including documentary films, a Borderlands Tour, a Genealogy Workshop and much more.
We strongly encourage those with relevant research or presentation topics to submit a proposal for presentation (or for a panel session) at the conference. Please feel free to forward this announcement to colleagues and to professional and academic societies with interests in the topic.
