
Judeo-Spanish Comparative Studies: Literary, Linguistic and Cultural Perspectives
The ucLADINO symposium will be held on Tuesday, February 21st, 2012
Featuring Keynote Speakers:
Rachel Amado Bortnick, founder of Ladinokomunita
Alicia Sisso Raz, founder of Voces de Haketia
This symposium will focus on creating dialogue within a multi-disciplinary field that may further explore the many facets of ‘Judeo-Spanish.’ As such, ucLADINO invites proposals from graduate students related to Judeo-Spanish literary, linguistic or cultural topics. Advanced undergraduates are also encouraged to submit proposals.
Topics of exploration may include, but are not limited to:
-Preservation vs. Revitalization of Judeo-Spanish in the 20th/21st centuries.
-Ethnomusicology and the Sephardim
-Comparative Studies on Judeo-Spanish Vernaculars (Djudezmo & Haketía)
– Languages and Politics in contact with Judeo-Spanish
-Sephardic literature in Judeo-Spanish
-Ladino (the calque) vs. Ladino (the spoken vernacular)
– Anthropological investigation in/of Sephardic communities
-Linguistic variations of Judeo-Spanish in comparison with Spanish (or other languages)
Abstract Submission: The deadline for proposals is Tuesday, January 3, 2012
Proposals are invited for individual and group papers/panels
Individual papers will be presented by one (or more) authors within a twenty-minute period, followed by a brief discussion.
Abstracts should include your name, institutional affiliation, email address, any audio-visual requirements, proposed paper title and a 250 word abstract, attached as an MS Word or PDF document.
