This week, two of the winter/spring mini courses I will be offering at the JCC in Manhattan opened for registration.
The daytime course is all about food — Jewish food through the ages and how it developed.
The second is about Jewish women who have challenged the world — a course that I had offered in the daytime, but never made available before in the evening, to those who cannot come during the day.
The evening course will be of particular interest to our Dona Gracia fans for the way it fits her into the larger world of poliltically active Jewish women.
Details and links are below:
1. The People of the Kitchen: A History of Jewish Food: midday classes
From ancient times to present day, Jews have enjoyed their particular cuisine (kosher or not)—rye bread, pastrami, bagels or (in certain Mediterranean countries) a passion for eggplant dishes. During the Inquisition, culinary habits became a telltale sign of secret Jews. How did the idea of “Jewish food” develop? This three-part mini course will take you on a fascinating journey through time and place.

2. Jewish Women Challenging the World: evening classes
For 2,000 years, Jewish women have been the innovators behind countless social, political, and artistic endeavors. From the Jewish women philosophers of ancient Alexandria, the converso women of the Renaissance period, to the fiery revolutionaries whose voices affected hearts and minds during the chaotic politics of the early 20th century, savor the discovery of new and lesser-known faces.
