Named for a folk song sung in Ladino, TREES CRY FOR RAIN opens a fascinating personal vista onto the rich but vanishing Sephardic culture and its nearly extinct language, Ladino. With stories, songs, food, and music, the eloquent Rachel Amado Bortnick, an American immigrant from Turkey, uses her childhood memories to reconstruct what life was like for Sephardic Jews in Turkey before modern assimilation took effect, exploring her roots and sharing the traditions that were passed down to her through the generations.
