The Crossroad of Ángel Sanz Briz by Instituto Cervantes Sydney

sanz_briz

Angel Sanz Briz was a Spanish diplomat in Hungary during World War II. Acting on his own, in 1944 he prevented more than 5500 Jews from being sent to the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp. His successful efforts were recognised in 1966 when he was awarded the title of Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem, the prestigious Israeli Institute for Holocaust Remembrance and Studies.

In his memory, the Cervantes Institute in Sydney will screen the documentary «The Crossroads of Angel Sanz Briz», directed by José Alejandro González. The film narrates the life and actions taken by the Spanish envoy through the testimony of some of the Jewish individuals whose life he saved. The documentary also gives voice to historians, renowned international experts and the family of Angel Sanz Briz.

After the screening, the Consul General of Spain in Sydney, Alvaro Iranzo, will maintain a dialogue with the audience on the facts portrayed in the film and its historical context. The Consul General was Ambassador of Spain in Israel between 2004 and 2008 and is familiar with the figure of Angel Sanz Briz and other Spaniards who saved Jewish lives during World War II, seven of which have up to now been recognised as Righteous Among the Nations. Most of them were diplomats in different European cities under Nazi Germany occupation.
