Seattle Sephardic Network, Joel and Maureen Benoliel, and Seattle University are pleased to present author Andrée Aelion Brooks, who will speak at a special Sunday Session of Seattle University’s Search for Meaning Book Festival on Feb. 28, 2016.
Brooks, author of «The Woman who Defied Kings: the life and times of Doña Gracia Nasi» and «Russian Dance: a true story of Intrigue and Passion in Stalinist Moscow,» among others, will speak at 1 p.m. at Seattle University Vachon Gallery. A kosher reception will follow. Women in the 16th century were not supposed to challenge authority. Yet Doña Gracia Nasi demonstrated that with sufficient savvy she could outwit the crowned heads of Europe. Her goal was to build an escape network that saved hundreds of her people – forcibly converted Jews who were being abused by the Inquisition. How did she do it? How were the documents found? Find out at this intriguing presentation by Brooks. After contributing to the New York Times for almost 20 years, Brooks has published several award-winning books on often overlooked aspects of Jewish history.
The Seattle University School of Theology and Ministry is hosting Brooks at a special Sunday event as part of its mission to offer opportunities for interfaith dialogue, encounter and partnership. The school has worked with its partners for eight years to bring a Jewish perspective to campus by expanding its programming to include annual Jewish-Christian forums, cultivating an interfaith student union and incorporating courses taught on Hebrew scripture into its curriculum.
This event is open to the public. Please RSVP at 206-296-2580or uaevents@seattleu.edu. Space is limited.
