This is the weekly column of David Shasha in eSefarad.
Just over a year ago our dear friend Maria Rosa Menocal passed away. I would like to take a moment on the first anniversary of her death to once again pay tribute to the brilliant and deeply moving work that she did on the Sephardic-Andalusian cultural heritage.
We now live in a time when discussion of Muslim Spain has been severely curtailed, when the historical relevance of Sephardic Judaism and its rich legacy has largely been eliminated from public consciousness.
It was Maria’s great wish to have this brilliant Iberian culture be restored to its rightful place in our civilization. She worked tirelessly to make students and lay readers aware of the many aspects of Andalusian culture and its literary productions.
I take this moment to re-send the special edition of the SHU I sent out previously to mark this sad anniversary in the hope that her many books and articles will be read by an increasing number of people who will find there one of the most important keys to understanding the heritage of Medieval Iberia.
In addition to the reminiscences of this great woman, I have included two of her articles, a couple of my own reviews of her work, and a reading list of her books.
May her memory be a blessing to us as we continue to do battle to restore our noble Sephardic heritage in the larger world.
