Eydie Gorme

Eydie Gorme, Grammy winning singer and artist of Sephardic ancestry.

Eydie Gormé (also spelled Gorme; August 16, 1928 – August 10, 2013) was an American singer who performed solo as well as with her husband, Steve Lawrence, in popular ballads and swing. She earned numerous awards, including a Grammy and an Emmy. After retiring in 2009, she died in 2013, and is survived by Lawrence, who continues to perform as a solo act.

Gormé was born Edith Gorme (her obituary said Edith Gormezano, and census sources indicate Edith Garmezano) on August 16, 1928, in Manhattan, the daughter of Nessim and Fortuna, Sephardic Jewish immigrants. Her father, a tailor, was from Sicily and her mother was from Turkey. Gormé was a cousin of singer-songwriter Neil Sedaka.

She graduated from William Howard Taft High School in 1946 with Stanley Kubrick in her class. She worked for the United Nations as an interpreter, using her fluency in the Ladino and Spanish languages, while singing in Ken Greenglass’s band during the weekends.

His first recording was in 1950 with the Tommy Tucker and Don Brown Orchestra, and a second recording included Dick Noel. The MGM label produced these two recordings on vinyl records at 78 rpm.

Gormé also worked as a hired singer. He worked on the big bands of Glenn Miller and singer Tex Beneke. In 1951 Eydie made several recordings of radio auditions that were later released as long-lasting records and recently as CDs. In 1952 Eydie Gormé began to record like soloist, and its first recordings distributed them the seal Coral.

She had her first big break and met her lifelong partner when she and singer Steve Lawrence were called for the original Tonight Show, which was led by Steve Allen. Andy Williams was also a singer for The Tonight Show at that time.

She married Steve Lawrence in 1957, had two children, one of whom died, of heart complications.

They achieved fame by their famous dialogues and muletillas in the stage, in which they joked and made fun of married life.

In 1995 Gormé and Lawrence were distinguished by the contribution that during their life they made to music by the Songwriters Hall of Fame

The merger that made the pair of ballads and breezy swing has combined with the continuity of their marriage and their humor, which turned them into North American icons, although neither of them have placed a simple album together or separately in the classification Of the American Top 40 since 1963.
