The New York Andalus Ensemble makes its Brooklyn debut performing music from the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa, in Arabic, Hebrew, Spanish, and Ladino.
The New York Andalus Ensemble makes its Brooklyn debut on May 5th, performing music from the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa, in Arabic, Hebrew, Spanish, and Ladino. The New York Andalus Ensemble incorporates a large choir and a wide array of traditional and modern acoustic instruments.
The ensemble brings participants from varied religious and ethnic backgrounds together to learn about the rich and varied cultures of the Maghreb and al-Andalus, through musical study and expression. Performances extend this mission to some of the most diverse audiences in New York City, bringing people together from different faith traditions and ethnic backgrounds to share in this beautiful musical tradition. The musical material of the Maghreb, and by extension al-Andalus, is a perfect reflection of the plurality of the region’s history. The cosmopolitan New York City is the perfect place for this ensemble to reside and to renew classic narratives from al-Andalus.
Housed at the City University of New York-Graduate Center, this ensemble is underwritten by a number of different sponsoring institutions, including the Foundation for Iberian Music, the Music Programs at CUNY, the Institute for Sephardic Studies, and the Middle East-Middle Eastern American Center (MEMEAC).
The concert will take place in CBE’s historic sanctuary. Co-sponsors for the event include the Foundation for Iberian Music, the Institute for Sephardic Studies, the Middle Eastern-Middle Eastern American Center, the American Sephardi Federation, and AsefaMusic-JAMs.
