Tonight I had the opportunity to attend a concert given by Liliana Benveniste as part of the XXVII Sephardic Festival in Miami, Florida. The turnout was fabulous and the room became very quiet with anticipation as Liliana came on stage dressed in a magnificent and exotic dress and shawl in shades of pinks and reds.
With incredible good humor and charm, she delighted all that were present with song after song in the melodic and hauntingly familiar Ladino language. There were several outbursts of singing and clapping as she invited the audience to join in.
Liliana became one with everyone present as she explained some of the lovely and special Sephardic traditions associated with wedding rituals . She regaled us with many songs and at one time was joined on stage by the internationally renowned tenor, Isaac Salinas. Each one complemented the other as the intensity of the music increased!
It was indeed an honor and rare pleasure to have been there and witness her electricity first hand.
