"'Una corte rabínica israelí dictamina que los chuetas somos judíos"

20 meses después de mi solitario retorno la puerta se abre para todos los descendientes de judíos conversos de Mallorca.

“Los chuetas mallorquines son judíos, nuestros hermanos los hijos de Israel, la nación de D-os”. Esta es la conclusión del dictamen emitido por el rabino Nissim Karelitz, jefe la la Gran Corte Rabinica de la ciudad israelí de Bnei Brak y uno de los rabinos más importantes del mundo. La buena nueva fue traída a Mallorca por Michael Freund, presidente de Shavei Israel y Elihahu Birbaum, rabino de esta entidad. Ambos convocaron una rueda de prensa en Palma, que tuve el honor de compartir con ellos.

En apenas dos meses los descendientes de judíos conversos de Mallorca, los chuetas, hemos sido objeto de un doble reconocimiento. Por una parte, el pasado 5 de mayo, el Govern de les Illes Balears, presidido entonces por Francesc Antich, se puso al frente de una acto institucional de reparación y desagravio, que contó con el apoyo de todas las entidades mallorquinas dedicadas a la cultura hebrea, entre ellas Tarbut. Fue la primera vez en 320 años que la infamia perpetrada contra nuestros antepasados en aquellos infaustos Autos de Fe de 1691-93 fue claramente condenada por una autoridad, civil o religiosa. En aquella ocasión estuvo presente el rabino Wiessel, número 2 de Karenblitz, quién nos prometió trasladar a su superior la realidad actual de los chuetas.

A partir de ahora los chuetas mallorquines que así lo deseen podrán iniciar las gestiones para ser oficialmente admitidos como judíos y contar como minian (quorum) en los oficios religiosos. El rabino Birbaum, quien se reunió en la noche del domingo con un pequeño grupo de descendientes de conversos en la sinagoga palmesana, fue muy claro al respecto: “No se trata -dijo- de que mañana nos situemos en medio de la calle y pongamos una kipá sobre la cabeza de cualquier persona que tenga uno o varios de los 15 apellidos estigmatizados”. “Lo que hemos venido a traer – prosiguió- es una normativa halájica que, como tal, solamente vincula a los chuetas que manifiesten su deseo de retornar a la fe de sus antepasados”.

Para Michael Freund, que se emocionó mucho al transmitir la noticia, “este dictamen abrirá el camino a los descendientes de aquellos cuya religión fue secuestrada, borrados sus nombres y maldecida su memoria”. A partir de este punto la puerta está abierta y Shavei Israel organizará, después del verano, toda una serie de actuaciones tendentes a mostrar el camino a los chuetas que, de algún modo, quieran retornar a sus ancestros.

Personalmente, nunca quise aceptar la conversión al judaísmo. Siempre supe que era judío. Durante seis largos años fui un navegante entre las dos orillas. A través de mis libros expresé claramente mi identidad, pero en medio de la oscuridad no divisaba ya la costa que había abandonado. No podía volver atrás, así que seguí adelante. Hasta que un día de finales de 2009 encontré mi redención en Nueva York, la misma ciudad que acogió a miles de “marranos” que, huyendo de la Inquisición, buscaron cobijo en una nueva tierra de promisión. En la noche del domingo 10 de julio, pocas horas antes de anunciar, junto a Freund y Birbaum, la gran noticia, me emocioné con las lágrimas de algunos chuetas jóvenes, que no podían creerse lo que estaban escuchando. Entonces supe que siempre me había interesado más este reconocimiento colectivo que el mío personal, que había conquistado, como un solitario trofeo, en la antigua Nueva Amsterdam.

La puerta está ahora abierta. Sólo falta decisión y valor para cruzarla.

Chuetas of Majorca recognized as Jewish

Descendants of secret Jews are «from our brethren the children of Israel,» Rabbi Nissim Karlewitz rules.

A leading rabbi and halachic authority in Israel has recognized the Chuetas of Palma de Majorca as Jewish, the Shavei Israel organization announced on Monday.

The Chuetas are descended from the Jewish inhabitants of the Spanish island of Majorca who suffered extreme oppression in the Middle Ages, until by 1435 all of them had been killed or forcibly converted to Catholicism.

Because the Chuetas are related to the previous generations and married among themselves they should be considered Jewish, Shavei Israel Chairman Michael Freund told reporters that Rabbi Nissim Karlewitz, chairman of the Beit Din Tzedek (rabbinical court) in Bnei Brak, wrote in a letter to the organization.

“Since it has become clear that it is accepted among them [the Chuetas] that throughout the generations most of them married among themselves, then all those who are related to the former generations are Jews, from our brethren the children of Israel, the nation of God,” Karlewitz wrote.

“We, the Jewish people, have a responsibility to the Chuetas,” Freund told The Jerusalem Post. “Their ancestors were kidnapped from us and taken against their will six centuries ago. The Inquisition sought to quash their Jewish identity down through the ages and we are coming here today to say that the Inquisition did not succeed. Jews are still here and the Chuetas are still here, and the best revenge on the Inquisition would be to bring as many of these people as possible back to their roots and back to their people.”

Despite having been converted, the Chuetas – whose name comes from the Catalan word for pig – continued to face intense discrimination and oppression, and were not allowed to marry Catholics or adopt certain professions. Because of the ban on intermarriage, the Chuetas almost exclusively married within their own community.

“Although there is no actual discrimination any longer against Chuetas, on a societal level many feel ostracized and to a certain extent outsiders,” Freund said. “Acceptance of the Chuetas over the past 40 years has grown, which is positive, but brings with it a greater danger of assimilation, which is why the timing of this announcement is so important.”

Karelitz’s decision refers to the Chuetas as a collective, and for anyone wanting to return in full to the Jewish community it will be necessary for a rabbinical court to speak with the individual. According to Freund, many of the Chuetas have documentation attesting to their family lines, often going back 500 years.

“There are 15 distinct Chueta family names. Because of the historical circumstances and because of the endogamy practices, it is relatively easy to document and prove their genealogy,” Freund said.

In May, the president of the Balearic Islands province of Spain, Francesc Antich, attended a memorial service in the Majorcan capital of Palma commemorating the execution in 1691 of 37 Chuetas for practicing Judaism in secret, including Rabbi Rafael Valls, the secret rabbi of the Chuetas who, along with two others, was burned alive. Antich condemned the “grave injustice” done against the Chuetas, the first time an official from Majorca had condemned such events.

“The recognition of their Jewishness was received with great happiness and joy, some people at the announcement burst into tears, because they now know the Jewish people are aware of them and feel a kinship with them,” Freund said of the press conference on Monday.

Rabbi Nissan Ben-Avraham, who is of Chuetas origin and works for Shavei Israel in Palma de Majorca, will be joining with the Arachim outreach organization to provide a program of lessons in Hebrew, Jewish history, culture and religion for the Chuetas.

“We are not coming here to tell people how to live their lives, we are just presenting them with an option. Those who wish to return to the Jewish people will now have opportunity to do so and will be welcomed back with open arms. Our goal is to help as many as possible to return to their Jewish roots,” Freund said.

“Els xuetes formen part del poble d’Israel”

Els xuetes són jueus conversos al cristianisme que mantenien vives les seves creences en privat. Ara, un prominent rabí reconeix aquest col·lecitu social -tradicionalment estigmatizat i segregat- com autèntics jueus que a més, formen part del poble d’Israel.

Dirigents de l’organització Shavei Israel han vengut avui expressament des de Jerusalem a Palma per fer arribar una notícia històrica: per primera vegada en 600 anys, un prominent rabí ha declarat que els xuetes de Mallorca són jueus i formen part del poble d’Israel. És un reconeixement que ve després que el 5 de maig passat el Govern de les Illes honoràs la memòria dels xuetes.
