Judith Cohen and Dolores Sloan entertain and educate on Saturday, December 19 at 7:30 pm at an End of Hanukah Sephardic Celebration, a concert of traditional Sephardic and Hanukah music, highlighted by related background facts, legends and folk tales, and followed by refreshments and festivities.
Dr. Cohen, whose home is in Toronto, is an ethnomusicologist and worldwide performer, specializing in Judeo-Spanish («Ladino») Sephardic music, songs from Crypto-Jewish regions of the Portuguese-Spanish border, as well as in medieval and traditional music from many lands. She accompanies her traditional-style singing on a variety of string and percussion instruments.
Sloan is a writer, speaker and professor, whose book, The Sephardic Jews of Spain and Portugal: Survival of an Imperiled Culture in the Fifteenth and Sixteenth Centuries, was published earlier this year.
This is the premier effort by the two artists to bring their related specialties together in one performance. Sloan will combine readings from her book with poetry and storytelling to introduce Cohen’s performance of like-themed songs and lyrics. In addition to presentations from pre-exile Spain and Portugal, there will be songs from the Sephardic Diaspora, such as from Morocco and Bosnia, and about Hanukah. A Yiddish song or two may be added at listeners’ requests.
The concert and festivities are open to all and are cosponsored by Arbeter Ring with the Sephardic Singles Havurah, a social organization of people interested in various aspects of Sephardic culture. Admission for the evening is $10 for members of Arbeter Ring and the Havurah, and $15 for the general public.
