The Museum of the Jewish People at Beit Hatfutsot is pleased to announce a new Capsule Exhibit, Hidden Identities: In the Footsteps of the Crypto-Jews, in partnership with The Jewish Heritage Alliance
Hidden Identities: In the Footsteps of the Crypto-Jews
Capsule exhibits are curated, ready-made photo exhibits that are suitable for display in synagogues, schools, small galleries, and libraries. The exhibits are offered at no cost and share stories about Jewish history, culture, heritage, and communal life. Based on the Museum’s dialogue approach, the exhibits’ accompanying educational guides are designed to help teachers to facilitate compelling and meaningful learning experiences.
Hidden Identities: In the Footsteps of the Crypto-Jews explores the long history of the Jews in the Iberian Peninsula, from the early years of the Roman Empire, through the Golden Age’s economic and cultural prosperity, to expulsions, forced conversions and the story of Crypto Judaism.
The exhibition sheds light on the fascinating stories of Crypto Jews, who lived as Christians in public and continued to secretly observe Judaism in the privacy of their homes, demonstrating the resilience and strength of a community. In addition, the exhibit explores women’s roles in preserving Jewish traditions and the remarkable contributions to world culture by Crypto Jews and their descendants.
