The Jews of Salonica, from 1492 to 1942

After their expulsion from Spain, many Jews found their way to the Ottoman empire, where they were apparently encouraged by local officials to settle in Salonica (now the Greek city of Thessaloniki). The city soon became home to one of the world’s largest and most important Jewish communities, which remained in strength until its destruction by Nazi Germany. Aron Rodrigue tells the story.
