Solomón Garazi (z’l)

Esta semana recibimos la muy triste noticia del fallecimiento de Solomón Garazi (z’l), un lider comunitario del judaismo en general y del sefaradismo en particular. Su participación activa y generosa ha sido de gran importancia desde Cuba hasta USA como lo describe este obituario aparecido en el Miami Herard de esta semana y que seguramente ampliaremos con detalles en próximas entregas.

Garazi, SALOMÓN. Miami Jewish Health Systems lamenta profundamente la pérdida de un miembro muy querido, desde hace mucho tiempo de la familia MJHS, Solomón Garazi.

Solomón fue un apreciado FUNDADOR de origen latino, auxiliar y síndico y miembro de por vida del Men’s Club y miembro de la Home Board y el Star Club.

Falleció el 21 de diciembre de 2010 a la edad de 85 años. su esposa y compañera del 50 años, Esther (miembro de Latin Auxiliary de por vida y fiduciario), le sobrevive.

Solomón fue un mensch, una persona de honor y dignidad, y un héroe de la comunidad judía con un gran corazón, un espíritu fuerte, una alegría para toda la vida, y de naturaleza muy amable. Siendo un adolescente en La Habana, se dedicó a causas judías, recaudar fondos para la lucha de Israel por la independencia a través de Maccabi (un grupo de jóvenes judíos) y la Organización Sionista de Cuba. Su recompensa fue casarse con Esther Egozi, quien compartió su fuerte compromiso.

En 1960, la Garazis buscaron refugio en Miami. En colaboración con el padre de Esther y hermanos, fundó dos empresas: la Suave Shoe Corporation y la Oriental Trading Company. Suave fue la primera empresa de propiedad de refugiados cubanos que cotizó en la Bolsa de Nueva York.

Con el tiempo la participación de Solomón profundizó en un espectro de causas judías ampliado a nivel nacional e internacional. Fue el fundador y presidente de temple Moses. Sirvió en el Consejo de Administración tanto de la Federación Judía del Gran Miami (como el primer cubanoamericano) y del Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center. Solomón ayudó a establecer el Programa de Estudios Sefardíes de la Universidad de Miami (más tarde el Museo Judío de Florida).

Fue presidente de la Federación Sefaradí Latinoamericana FeSeLa.

Solomón fue honrado en numerosas ocasiones por sus actos de justicia y caridad.

El Príncipe de Asturias, España le concedió el Premio de la Concordia. En 2009 América MJHS Latin Auxiliary, que Solomón ayudó a organizar en 1980, le otorgó su Premio a la Trayectoria. Solomón también fue reconocido por la Yeshiva University JNF, el Alcalde y la Ciudad de Miami, el Estado de la Florida, e Israel Bonds por su filantropía y servicio.

Además de Esther, le sobreviven sus hijos Belina, Dr. Isaac (Anita), Blanca Schoonover (Richard), nietos Estee, José, David, Daniel, Rebeca, Shlomo, y Esther; familia y un sinnúmero de queridos amigos. Le echaremos mucho de menos por todos los asociados de MJHS, autoridades de MJHS y el personal que le extienden su más sentido pésame a Esther y su familia.

Salomon Garazi fue el sponsor del libro «La comunidad hebrea de Cuba – la memoria y la historia» e Margalit Bejarano, que salio en el año 1996 editado por la Universidad Hebrea de Jerusalen gracias a su donacion y a su gran dedicacion a esta obra. Salomon quizo que alguien escribiera la historia de los judios en Cuba para transmitir a las generaciones de hijos y nietos el recuerdo de lo que fue la vida judia en Cuba, antes de la revolucion de Castro.

También ha participado en innumerables proyectos del Centro de Investigación y Difusión de la Cultura Sefardí.

GARAZI, SOLOMON. Miami Jewish Health Systems deeply grieves the loss of a beloved, longtime member of the MJHS family, Solomon Garazi.

Solomon was a cherished Latin FOUNDER, Latin Auxiliary and Men’s Club trustee and life member, and Home Board and Star Club member.

He passed away on December 21, 2010 at the age of 85. Solomon’s soul mate and wife of 50 years, Esther (a Latin Auxiliary life member and trustee), survives him.

Solomon was a mensch, a person of honor and dignity, and a hero of the Jewish community with a great heart, a strong spirit, a joy for life, and a deeply kind nature. As a teenager in Havana, he dedicated himself to Jewish causes, raising money for Israel’s fight for independence through Maccabi (a Jewish youth group) and Cuba’s Zionist Organization. His reward was marrying Esther Egozi, who shared his strong commitment.

In 1960 the Garazis sought refuge in Miami. In partnership with Esther’s father and brothers, they founded two businesses–the Suave Shoe Corporation and the Oriental Trading Company. Suave became the first company owned by Cuban refugees to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

Over time Solomon’s involvement in a spectrum of Jewish causes deepened and broadened both nationally and internationally. He was the founder and president of Temple Moses. He served on the Board of Directors of both the Greater Miami Jewish Federation (as the first Cuban American) and the Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center. Solomon helped establish both the Sephardic Jewish Studies Program at the University of Miami and Project Mosaic, (later the Jewish Museum of Florida).

He became the president of the Latin American Sephardic Federation.

Solomon was honored on many occasions for his righteous acts and charity. The Prince of Asturias, Spain awarded him the Premio de la Concordia. In 2009 MJHS’ Latin Auxiliary, which Solomon helped organize in 1980, bestowed upon him its Lifetime Achievement Award. Solomon was also recognized by Yeshiva University, JNF, the Mayor and City of Miami, the State of Florida, and Israel Bonds for his philanthropy and service.

In addition to Esther, Solomon is survived by their children Belina, Dr. Isaac (Anita), Blanca Schoonover (Richard), grand- children Estee, Joseph, David, Daniel, Rebecca, Shlomo, and Esther; extended family and countless loving friends. He will be greatly missed by everyone associated with MJHS. MJHS’ leadership and staff extend their deepest sympathy to Esther and family.

Donations in Solomon’s memory will be gratefully acknowledged by MJHS.

He was a great «jefe» for the entire time of our association, and up to now I still practice his knowledge every day.

I joined Suave Shoe as Chief Financial Officer of the Co. in 1972 and served as Secretary of its Board of Directors for several years. I consider it a privilege to have worked WITH (note not «for») Solomon for all the years I was at Suave. My only regret is that I did’nt work directly under him for he not only was a gifted business executive but also a man of great character, integrity and with such a great personality that you couldnt help but to consider him as an example of what a good human being should be. I’m sure that his family and close friends will sorely miss him. May he rest in peace.
