
Feb. 26 Public Lecture with Paris Papamichos Chronakis
Join us for our upcoming public lecture “Seeing like a Merchant — Jews and Greeks from Ottoman to Greek Rule” with visiting scholar Paris Papamichos Chronakis. As Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Modern Greek History at Royal Holloway University of London, Chronakis’ work examines the entangled histories and dived memories of Jews and Christians in the Eastern Mediterranean from the late Ottoman Empire to the Holocaust. During this lecture, Chronakis will discuss concepts from his new book «The Business of Transition: Jewish and Greek Merchants of Salonica from Ottoman to Greek Rule», specifically touching on how Jewish and Greek merchants of Salonica managed the tumultuous shift from Ottoman to Greek rule amid rising ethnic tensions and heightened class conflict.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Paris Papamichos Chronakis
Paris Papamichos Chronakis is Lecturer in Modern Greek History at Royal Holloway University of London where he teaches and researches on the history and memory of the Modern Mediterranean. His work explores questions of transition from empire to nation-state, bringing together the entangled histories of Jews, Muslims, and Christians from the late Ottoman Empire to the Holocaust.
