Fifty Sephardic Jews visit Castrillo Mota de Judíos (ex Matajudíos)

1430505171_068665_1430506392_miniatura_normalAlmost fifty Sephardic Jews around the world have visited this Friday the city of Burgos Castrillo Matajudíos at the invitation of its mayor, Lorenzo Rodriguez, in response to the proposed study and excavation of the past of this city Burgos, founded by Jews 1000 years ago and located in the Camino de Santiago. Last May, the inhabitants of this town of Burgos, with 29 votes in favor, decided to change the name of the town of Castrillo de Mota Jews. A total of 19 people, 56 adults of the city, chose to keep the name.

This trip to Castrillo Matajudíos was the culmination of Erensya III Summit, which was held in Avila, Madrid and Toledo, who met in Spain to fifty community members and institutions of the Sephardic diaspora, organized by the Sefarad-Israel Centre. These summits are held every two years and seek to avoid losing culture, heritage and the Sephardic tradition.

New York, Buenos Aires, Caracas, Paris, Seattle, Thessaloniki, Lyon, Lisbon, Nice and Istanbul Bogota are some of the hometowns of the thirty Sephardic Jews who traveled Matajudíos Castrillo, that in the near future Mota will be renamed Castrillo Jews, namely “in situ” projects that have been proposed this city of Burgos, after the name change, approved by referendum in May 2014, Europa Press municipal sources.

The mayor, Lorenzo Rodriguez, welcomed them in the town square, thanking “the effort to preserve the values ​​of Sephardic culture around the world throughout history.”

Rodriguez explained that “the name change Castrillo-do justice to a legacy, which did not correspond with either the history or the will of the neighbors.” In addition, he detailed his cultural project was launched with the help of Castile and Leon and now substance in excavations in Mota.

Then spoke the director of the Centro Sefarad-Israel, Miguel de Lucas, who stressed that “this city is a symbol, represents a bold anti-Semitism”, after which stressed the “courage” Mayor betting on a cause for the Jewish past of the city.

The Church of St. Stephen has served on this occasion for the mayor and the director of excavations, Angel Palomino, explain the projects aim to develop among which include, in addition to the continuation of excavations, building a center of interpretation of Sephardic culture in the Camino de Santiago, the plan designed by the architect Gonzalo Villarreal.

All these projects are intended to drive by the Cultural Association of Jews in Mota gestation and whose founding members were in the city to wrap the visit. This association will soon see the light and be visible on the website www.motadejudios.com

Despite the bad weather, visitors with its neighbor visited the excavations. Angel Palomino, director of the latter, said the results so far found in La Mota.

With the trip to the city of Burgos finished the III Summit Erensya, third edition, which took place in Spain, after those held in 2011 in Bulgaria (Sofia and Plovdiv) and 2013 in Turkey (Istanbul and Izmir).
