Dahan Center Receives Prime Minister’s Prize for the Study of Sephardic and Oriental Jewry (Bar-Ilan University)

The Aharon and Rachel Dahan Center for Culture, Society & Education in the Sephardic Heritage is the recipient of the Prime Minister’s Prize for the Study of Sephardic and Oriental Jewry. The Prize is awarded by the Ministry for Social Equality to encourage and strengthen research of Jewish communities in Arab countries and Iran.

«This recognition is the result of wonderful team work between academics and administrators,» said Dr. Shimon Ohayon, Director of the Dahan Center, in acknowledging the honor. «It belongs to all those who are involved in our Center’s efforts.»

In awarding the Prize, the judges committee noted the Dahan Center’s ongoing research on a broad range of topics, such as tradition and innovation, the Jews of Syria, community and heritage, Fez and other cities in Morocco – 1,000 years of creativity, and Jews and Muslims in the world of Islam. The committee further observed that the Center’s research delves into life in North African countries such as Yemen, Tunisia, Algeria, Libya and Morocco.
