ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Explore the memory, history, and culture of the Sephardic Jews through the Judeo-Spanish (Ladino) language.
Read selections from a variety of texts—both in Judeo-Spanish as well as in translation—that explore the Sephardic lifestyle and experience, and compare Sephardic communities throughout history and across the globe.
Instructor: Bryan Kirschen is a doctoral student of Hispanic linguistics at UCLA. He is the founder of ucLADINO, a student-run organization devoted to the preservation and revitalization of Judeo-Spanish, and the co-director of Saved by Language, a documentary exploring how the use of Judeo-Spanish saved the life of a young Bosnian boy during the Holocaust.
