Sephardi Women and Family Life in Early Modern Amsterdam
Dr. Tirtsah Levie Bernfeld
By the end of the sixteenth century a Jewish community was founded in Amsterdam, the main city and international port of the newly established Dutch Republic. It was created out of nothing and the first one of its kind in northern Europe, quickly to reach world renown. The founders of this community were New Christians or Conversos, refugees from the Iberian Peninsula and from the claws of the inquisition. Once arrived in Amsterdam, most of them embraced the faith of their forefathers and turned from New Christians into so called New Jews.
Different aspects of this famous community have been studied so far, yet little notice has been given to the role of women within its ranks, indispensable element to complete the description of culture of Dutch Sephardim of the time. Therefore in this lecture the focus will be laid upon issues of identity, emotions, educational background and economic activities among Sephardi women of early modern Amsterdam. Moreover, the status of women in the heart of the household and family life will be discussed. Attention will also be given to participation of females in the social life of the community, while the attitude of the community vis-à-vis its female constituency will also be handled. A variety of women will pass in review: the powerful women, whose influence could be felt not only in the family circle, but also in community life and the economy. Their charitable deeds will be dealt with: these often attained an international dimension, reaching out to and showing solidarity with their brethren, members of the Spanish Portuguese Jewish nation, far beyond the borders of the Dutch Republic. Yet, not only the rich and the famous will be observed, but also middle and lower class of women, who in contrast played a more modest, subordinate role in the social-economic life of the community in their search for protection and work. Some women could even be found in the margins of the Dutch Republic. Dutch Sephardi women also had a lot in common: most of them fled a horrendous tragedy of persecution, from where many reached free havens alone or with only part of their families. Female migration, therefore, is also being debated as is Iberian culture, which often marked their behavior. In short, this study tries to open a new window into life of Sephardim in early modern Amsterdam.
