Cantor Isak Maçoro, who with his extraordinary voice led the masses in Istanbuls biggest synagogues for more than 50 years and who was rightfully renowned internationally as an outstanding hazzan has passed away. Born in Hasköy in 1918, Cantor Isak Maçoro was selected for his beautiful voice when still very young and served our community for long years. He started his career as a cantor at the Knesset Synagogue in 1939 and through his extensive musical education he developed his tenor voice to perform both alafranga (in the Western tradition) and in alaturka maqams. He was educated by the famous great rabbis of his time and then started working at the Neve Salom Synagogue, when it opened in 1950. He was also the cantor of the Sisli Synagogue until 1979. He then started working at the Büyükada Synagogue in 1981 and continued his work there until he retired. Isak Maçoro, whose voice enchanted so many for so long was accompanied on his last journey on Thursday, 23 October.
