The Salti Institute Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Program (2023-2024)

The Salti Institute for Ladino Studies at Bar-Ilan University will award up to two research grants to postdoctoral researchers seeking to focus on subjects related to Ladino language, literature and Sephardic culture. The grants will be awarded for the academic year (2023-2024) and are aimed at encouraging and advancing a young generation of researchers. The grants will be awarded on behalf of the Salti Foundation.

The research grants will offer young researchers full access to the Salti Institute Ladino publication archive and research library, which houses a stimulating collection of primary research material in Ladino. This archive has over 850 Ladino titles (books and newspapers) as well as manuscripts (Solitreo), letters, diaries, photographs and other documents. The reference library has over 3000 titles in fields related to the historical and cultural arena of the Sephardic communities, before and after the expulsion. The Salti Institute also promotes the research of oral literature, using other collections in various institutions throughout Israel, such as the National Library of Israel.

The Salti Institute will provide research fellows with a friendly and supportive work environment; basic secretarial services, a work station with an Internet connection, assistance in accessing the archive material, etc

The grant period: Four months in the first semester (from October 2023 through January 2024) and/or four months in the second semester (March-June 2024).

The grant will be in amount of NIS 40.000 per semester (in four monthly installments). Foreign grantees will receive a subsidy for their flight to Israel (living accommodations and insurance will be covered in the monthly payment). In the case of a full year residency the grantees will additionally receive NIS 10.000 for February, between semesters.

Conditions: PhD researcher (who have completed their studies no later than 2013); grantees will be required to participate in all activities held by the Salti Institute and to spend at least 3 days at the institute; research fellows will be required to be in Israel throughout the grant period, with absences of up to two weeks (cumulative); research fellows will not lecture at the Salti Institute for Ladino Research during the grant period, but will be required to give several guest lectures on their research field (during or immediately following their research); the research findings will be published in an article and will also be submitted for publication in the Ladinar research journal of the Salti Institute (subject to the accepted process for accepting articles for publication).

Grant application process: Please sent a CV (limited to two pages) with a current photograph; a scan of the Ph.D. certificate (or confirmation that the Ph.D. thesis was submitted); research plan (up to 3 pages) accompanied by an application to be teamed up in advance with one of the senior researchers at Salti Institute. Please indicate if your research is a new or continuing project.
