ALL – Ladino in the Graphic Novel: A Conversation with Josh Tuininga – February 26, 2026

Join ALL Co-Director Hannah Pressman for a conversation with Josh Tuininga, author of the award-winning graphic novel We Are Not Strangers (Abrams ComicArts, 2023).

Set in the multicultural Seattle Central District of the 1940s, We Are Not Strangers explores the unique situation of Japanese and Jewish Americans living side by side in a country at war. These perspectives converge in a portrait of a community’s struggle with race, responsibility and what it truly means to be an American. We Are Not Strangers was honored by the American Library Association (Sophie Brody Medal Honoree), the National Jewish Book Awards (Finalist), National EGLA AWARD | Best YA Non-Fiction Graphic Novel (Winner), and the Jewish Comic Experience | Combating Prejudice Award, among others.

Josh Tuininga is an author, artist, and graphic designer based in North Bend, WA. A graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Tuininga’s artistic career has explored a variety of mediums including sequential art, animation, painting and design. In 2003, he founded an Art + Design Agency, The Medium, where he continues to work as Creative Director. Josh is the author of two children’s books, Why Blue? & Dream OnHe also makes music with his wife as To the River.

ALL Authors is a public program that engages with authors and creators working with Ladino in the American cultural sphere. The conversations are held in English with Ladino references throughout. This free Zoom event will last 1 hour 15 minutes minutes and will include time for Q&A with the author.
